OBSERVATORY GARDEN

Inota Festival, 2025
Inside classical weather instrument shelters
an artificial storm rages: the sound of thunderstorm is accompanied by lightning, wind
and fog.Our attention is drawn to the subjectivity of
perception, since the inner mechanisms are
fully detached from the outer world, just as
we are often guided by our beliefs and expectations. The desperate need to measure and understand fully such highly complex and chaotic
systems like the weather reflects our visceral desire for order and security, while the
aim for accurate prediction reveals humanity’s universal aspiration to foresee the future. However, the harder we try to influence factors beyond our control, the more we
are confronted with unpredictability – and
the stormier our inner world becomes.

	OBSERVATORY GARDENinstallation, 2024
The installation features three classical weather instrument shelters, but instead of housing measuring devices, an artificial storm rages inside. The installation suggests that the act of measurement itself can influence the system being observed, as much as it underscores the subjectivity inherent in our understanding of complex processes like weather. The inner mechanisms are detached from the outer world, much like our beliefs guiding us. By reducing atmospheric phenomena to „good” or „bad” weather, the installation reflects humanity’s desire for order and predictability, while also acknowledging that our attitudes toward unpredictability are the only things we can hope to control.

	FORCE FIELDKinetic installation, 2026

The installation approaches the concept of control not as a
clearly defined external constraint, but as an invisible mode of operation that
permeates habitual movements and seemingly self-evident gestures, such as
making a pass.

On a foosball table devoid of players, the absence of its
familiar controlling elements becomes immediately apparent. Electromagnets
embedded beneath the playing surface generate a programmed, continuously
shifting magnetic field that unpredictably alters the movement of the ball. As
the components that normally allow players to direct the game disappear,
controllability itself becomes an illusion, while the collectively accepted
rules and objectives of the match are called into question.

How would the game function without precise rules?
What if we could no longer recognize who the opponent was – or even the
referee? What if our team suddenly disappeared from the field, yet we failed to
notice that the rules had changed at halftime? What if we realized that our choices do not arise solely
from our own decisions, but are instead the resultant forces of a field that we
can perceive only in part?

Within the field of possibilities outlined by these
questions, the structure of the match is defined not by the predictable
excitement of scoring points, but by deflection and a state of perpetual
motion. The choreography that emerges unfolds according to principles that
remain inaccessible even to the spectator.

Why do we still need human mediation despite increasingly sophisticated forecasting models and digital technologies? What role do human perception and knowledge play in making forecasts? We examined how atmospheric phenomena and forecasting technologies function as both medium and metaphor, shaping our perception of uncertainty and control in everyday life as well as in the context of the ecological crisis. We investigated performative spaces in which the physical body – the subject itself – served as the primary measuring tool. The physical space transformed into a living weather map and a wind tunnel is recontextualized as a sovereign space.

By engaging weather as a material condition and a cultural construct, we sought to create a dialogue between intuitive artistic experimentation and processes of scientific knowledge production. Measurement is never entirely neutral or disembodied.

During WWI, Lewis Fry Richardson developed the first mathematical weather forecasting model. Lacking electronic computers, he envisioned a massive "forecasting factory" where tens of thousands of people would continuously calculate regional weather equations in real time. Our performance project revives and reimagines Richardson's utopian vision, shifting it from mathematical computation to collective somatic experience.

Through structured scores, forecasting is translated into spatial movement. Participants trace self-generated atmospheric curves, translating thoughts into tangible, physical trajectories. It is an exercise in collective listening and collective mapping, where uninitiated performers engage in a shared cartography of the present moment – observing sudden encounters and the rhythm of their own movements.

	Weather Machine

video 8’12”

Two figures stand within the wind tunnel, enacting the gesture of measurement. The human body

–

ordinarily subject to air, turbulence, and instability

–

is here subsumed into the system of quantification, becoming both instrument and subject of its own calibration. Dwarfed by the monumental apparatus, the figures hold obsolete devices, their insistence on control where control is unattainable evoking broader cultural anxieties: the relentless accumulation of data, the fetishization of measurement, and the persistent illusion of mastery over nature in spite of our fundamental fragility within it.Wearing lab coats stages “science” as a costume and performance, rather than a purely rational pursuit. The lab becomes a theater of knowledge production. Standing still inside the machine

–

rather than operating it

–

exposes the performativity of measurement: that science is not only about precision but also about gestures, authority, and symbols.

	HUNDUN
installation, 2022
Hundun is a faceless being representing primal and fertile chaos in the Daoist tale of the Zhuangzi. Its story implies themes such as the relationship between society and the individual, and the tendency of the majority to uniformise against

those who are different from them.

The fact that the originally amorphous shape of the mythological creature is being reduced to an anthropomorphic figure by a tight suit — as a classic type of uniform — points out ironically the narrowing of individuality and creative potential as well as the absurdity of ignoring nonhuman perspectives.

FREGOLIkinetic installation, 2024
“Mihály Hurai has always been the greatest quick-change artist. They always put him where he is most needed. […]

This man is incapable of doing a bad job.”The Italian actor Leopoldo Fregoli (1867-1936) was an amazing quick-change artist, the true master of imitation. His name is synonymous not only with the hanging cloth dryer used once to store his costumes but also with versatility.

Similarly to Fregoli, the idea of rapid role-changing is not unfamiliar to the society of the 21st century — we often step out of ourselves multiple times
a day to excel in various aspects of life, so as not to fall behind. Working for
hours beside the assembly line or operating parallel looms could be extremely
demanding physical work, not to mention that the majority of industrial workers
worked in multiple shifts and commuted from the countryside.
‘I could have circled
the globe, so many kilometers I walked around the machines’ - remembers a group leader from the hosiery factory in Eszter Zsófia Tóth’s study titled ‘This much
time is enough for a husband, let alone a factory’ – Factory identity in the
life narratives of women and men workers. The stylized brigade flags that move around the installation evoke the rivalry between the groups of workers performing
each work phase.

BULLFIGHT IN THE CLOTH FACTORYvideo 2’10”, 2022

The video evokes the image of the working woman typically portrayed in archival newsreels of socialist garment factories, the “gray little sparrow” laboring tirelessly while, in the background, two men wrestle in the suits she has sewn.
The title suggests ironically that sewing might represent a bastion of masculinity, prompting reflections on work-related gender stereotypes. At the same time, each character embodies overachievement and varying degrees of endless competition: the classic “all against all” case is contrasted with the self-exploiting seamstress working on piece-rate wages, thus being forced to compete with herself.
Confronting viewers the absurdity of overachievement and the dubious celebration of endless growth, the stylized imagery juxtaposes socialist wage labor with today’s meritocratic society.Exhibited in K11 Labor as part of the exhibition Work/Competition Budapest, Feb 27 - March 21 2024
