FREGOLI (2024)

kinetic installation

Italian actor Leopoldo Fregoli (1867–1936), a master of quick-change artistry and imitation, embodied the art of rapid transformation. In much the same way, 21st-century society is no stranger to the constant shifting of roles—we often step out of ourselves multiple times a day to excel in different areas of life, striving to keep up.

For industrial workers, the demands were equally relentless: long hours beside assembly lines or managing multiple looms required immense physical effort, compounded by the challenges of multi-shift work and commuting from rural areas.

“I could have circled the globe, with all the kilometers I walked around the machines,” recalls a group leader from a socialist hosiery factory in Eszter Zsófia Tóth’s study This Much Time is Enough from a Husband, Let Alone a Factory – Factory Identity in the Life Narratives of Women and Men Workers.

The stylized brigade flags, moving at varying speeds, symbolize the competition between worker groups as they perform each phase of production.
