Galileo Galilei was an Italian astronomer and professor of mathematics at the University of Padua. Proving that the Earth revolved around the Sun, he confronted the Catholic Church and was forced to recant his teachings. He lived under house arrest for the rest of his life. "Eppur si muove" ("And yet it moves" [the Earth]) – whispered allegedly Galilei, as he turned away from the Inquisitors.
